JAECOO 7 or BYD SEALION 7?
Petrol flexibility or fully electric driving? Compare the cars with your week in mind.
At a glance
- JAECOO SHS-P Luxury: £35,170 OTR, plug-in hybrid and 56 miles of electric range WLTP.
- SEALION 7 Comfort: £46,990 OTR, fully electric and 300-mile WLTP range.
- The practical choice: JAECOO’s lower entry price and petrol backup, or a full-EV routine with more electric-only range.
Choose the powertrain, not the shared number
JAECOO 7 SHS-P and BYD SEALION 7 both offer five-seat SUV space and electric driving, but they approach longer journeys differently. JAECOO is a plug-in hybrid with a petrol engine. The BYD is fully electric.
Here we compare JAECOO 7 SHS-P Luxury with SEALION 7 Comfort rear-wheel drive. Do not confuse JAECOO’s petrol or SHS-H full-hybrid versions with this car, or BYD’s larger-battery Excellence with Comfort.

Why the JAECOO makes sense for mixed journeys
For regular shorter trips, charging the JAECOO lets you make use of its stored electricity. Its 56-mile WLTP electric figure is a useful benchmark, although weather and driving conditions change what you achieve.
For a longer journey, the petrol engine remains available. That can suit guests who want electric capability for daily use without making every long-distance trip depend entirely on charge stops. The benefit still depends on charging regularly; a plug-in hybrid is not a way to get free electric miles.
Luxury adds comfort features including heated and ventilated front seats and a panoramic roof. Ask to see the current UK car and equipment list, especially when comparing an earlier review with the updated cabin.
Where a fully electric SUV changes the routine
SEALION 7 Comfort has a much longer electric-only range and no petrol engine. If home or workplace charging is dependable and your journeys suit the network, that can be an attractive routine.
BYD lists up to 150kW DC charging for Comfort and about 32 minutes from 10–80% under the stated conditions. JAECOO quotes about 20 minutes from 30–80%. Those charging windows are different, so the minute figures are not a like-for-like speed ranking.
Nor should a PHEV’s combined petrol-and-electric range be compared with a BEV’s electric range as though they measure the same thing. Here, 56 and 300 miles are the electric-only WLTP figures for the exact versions.
The shortlist test: your normal week
Write down a normal week’s mileage, your charging access and the trips that need extra planning. Then compare the complete purchase quote, electricity and petrol costs, insurance and servicing.
The JAECOO’s lower starting price and petrol flexibility are clear reasons to consider it. The BYD’s longer electric-only capability may suit a guest ready to make the full move to EV ownership. Neither answer needs a claim that one technology is right for everyone.
Before deciding, try the seating position, rear seats and boot opening. Our JAECOO team can explain SHS-P charging and controls and help arrange an appointment suited to your questions.
