Independent Research Delivers Reassurance for EV Buyers
According to the UK’s largest-ever used EV battery survey, conducted by battery health specialists Generational, the average State of Health (SoH) across 8,000 electric vehicles was an impressive 95%.
The study analysed EVs aged between brand new and 12 years old, with mileages ranging from zero to over 160,000 miles, across 36 different manufacturers.
Key findings include:
• Average battery health across all vehicles: 95%
• Even EVs aged 8–12 years showed a median State of Health of 85%
• The lowest 25% still averaged 82%
• Well-maintained older EVs often retained 90% of their original capacity
• High-mileage vehicles (over 100,000 miles) frequently returned 88–95% battery health
This is significantly above the 70% threshold typically used by manufacturers as the benchmark for battery warranty replacement.
The data clearly demonstrates that battery degradation is far less dramatic than many consumers have been led to believe.
What This Means for Used EV Buyers
One of the most interesting conclusions from the study is that mileage alone isn’t necessarily an indicator of battery health. In fact, newer, higher-mileage models can sometimes offer better battery performance than older vehicles with fewer miles.
