CX-30: manual or automatic?
Both gearbox options have six speeds. The better choice is the one that makes your usual journeys more enjoyable—not simply the one with the longer equipment list.
At a glance
- Two approaches: a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, depending on version.
- Choose around your journeys: direct gear selection or fewer tasks in stop-start traffic.
- Compare like for like: keep the engine, trim and model year consistent when checking cost and economy.
Why choose the six-speed manual?
A manual Mazda CX-30 lets you choose each gear yourself using the gear lever and clutch. If that involvement is part of what you enjoy about driving, it is a good reason to keep the manual on your shortlist.
Try it on roads you actually use. Check the clutch action, the reach to the lever and how comfortable your seating position feels when pulling away repeatedly. A short stretch of flowing road tells you something different from ten minutes of traffic.
The manual is not a lower-equipment car by definition. Compare the complete engine-and-trim specification rather than assuming gearbox choice tells you which cameras, seats or convenience features are included.
Why choose the six-speed automatic?
The automatic handles gear changes without a clutch pedal. That can be particularly appealing if your normal week includes busy junctions, queues or frequent urban trips.
It is worth trying at low speed as well as on an open road. Check how comfortably you can make a parking manoeuvre, join a roundabout and accelerate to the speed of the traffic. Your preference matters more than someone else’s blanket verdict on automatics.
Mazda’s UK product information specifies a six-speed automatic. It should not be confused with a continuously variable transmission simply because both avoid manual clutch operation.
Keep the engine choice separate
The current UK CX-30 information lists 2.5-litre e-Skyactiv G 140PS and 2.0-litre e-Skyactiv X 186PS petrol engines. Mazda’s M Hybrid system provides mild-hybrid assistance; this is not a plug-in hybrid and does not need a home charger.
Engine, drivetrain and trim availability affect the car you can order. Ask for the exact derivative rather than treating every gearbox, engine and equipment combination as interchangeable.
For a fair gearbox comparison, start with the same engine and trim where available. Then compare the full purchase quotation, insurance quotation and that derivative’s published WLTP economy. Official economy is a comparison measure, not a promise of your own fuel consumption.
A useful back-to-back drive
Write down three situations from your normal week: perhaps a crawling commute, a steep parking space and a faster A-road. Ask whether your appointment can include a representative route and the gearbox versions you want to consider.
Pay attention to the driving position and controls, not just how quickly each car accelerates. Would you still choose the same transmission on a wet Monday morning after a long day?

What about the newly announced 2027 range?
Mazda’s 14 October 2026 announcement says the forthcoming UK 2027 CX-30 range will offer manual and automatic transmissions on all grades except Prime-Line. It also introduces Homura Plus, with UK pricing still to be announced.
Those announced changes are not a promise of immediate stock or ordering availability. When enquiring now, confirm the model year, gearbox and written specification of the car being offered.
Your questions answered
Does the Mazda CX-30 have an automatic option?
Yes. Mazda’s UK product information lists a six-speed automatic as well as a six-speed manual. Availability depends on the engine, trim and model year.
Is the CX-30 automatic a CVT?
Mazda specifies a six-speed automatic for the UK CX-30. It is not described as a continuously variable transmission.
Do I need to charge the CX-30?
No. The petrol CX-30 uses Mazda M Hybrid mild-hybrid assistance, not an externally rechargeable plug-in hybrid system.
Which gearbox is cheaper to run?
Compare the exact derivatives’ purchase prices, WLTP economy, insurance quotes and your expected use. A generic manual-versus-automatic rule cannot give you the total cost for two differently specified cars.
