MX-5: soft top or RF?
A fabric roadster roof or a powered retractable hardtop: find the MX-5 that fits you.
At a glance
- Roadster: a manually folding fabric roof and a more open cabin when lowered.
- RF: a powered retractable hardtop; the rear buttresses remain in place.
- Before choosing: compare equivalent engines, roof operation, visibility and your luggage needs.
Mazda MX-5 Roadster versus RF
The roof changes the experience
Both versions of the MX-5 are two-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports cars. The roof is the main difference in this choice: the Roadster has a manually folding fabric top, while RF stands for Retractable Fastback and uses a powered hardtop.
Choose the soft top if you want the more open roadster feel and a simple manual roof. Consider RF if you prefer its fastback shape and opening the roof at the touch of a switch. The best choice is the one you enjoy with the roof closed as well as open.
Soft top: the traditional roadster choice
The fabric roof folds manually from the cabin. That gives you a direct, simple way to enjoy open-top driving without waiting for an electric mechanism. It is an important part of the Roadster’s appeal.
During your visit, try reaching the latch and operating the roof while parked. Make sure the movement feels comfortable for you and that you can secure it properly. Then sit with the roof raised: your view, seating position and cabin feel matter on wet days too.
RF: a powered roof with fastback style
The RF’s roof panels and rear window retract electrically, while the rear buttresses remain in place. That creates a different open-air experience from the fabric-roof Roadster.
Mazda quotes 13 seconds to open or close the RF roof. Its design keeps the roof mechanism from taking additional space out of the RF boot when operated. Follow the owner’s handbook for the conditions in which the mechanism can be used.
Try the switch with the car parked and compare your view over your shoulder. If you prefer the roof-up shape and the convenience of powered operation, RF is worth a closer look. Explore MX-5 RF.
Compare equivalent engines and grades
Keep the engine comparison fair
Compare the same engine and a similar equipment grade before attributing a price or performance difference to the roof. Confirm the versions currently available with the team.
Bring the luggage you actually use
A two-seat sports car needs a different packing approach from a family hatchback. Check your usual bags, cabin storage and the space available with the roof in use.
Invicta’s model pages list Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line and Homura choices. Engine and equipment combinations vary, so choose the roof first, then check the exact quotation and stock.
There is no single roof that suits everyone. Rather than buying from a photograph alone, compare the driving position, visibility and roof operation in both versions.
