OMODA 5: what the experts say
The hybrid verdict, the equipment appeal and what to try for yourself.
At a glance
- Hybrid focus: the 2026 SHS-H is a no-plug full hybrid, not the original petrol car or the electric E5.
- Independent verdicts: Auto Express 3.5/5, Autotrader 3.5/5 and Carwow 6/10—kept separate.
- Buying takeaway: strong equipment and cabin value; use a test drive to assess comfort, response and controls.
The hybrid is the useful place to start
Reviews can help you decide whether an OMODA 5 belongs on your shortlist—but the version matters. The 2026 SHS-H full hybrid is different from the original petrol car tested in early launch reviews. It is also different from the fully electric E5.
The recurring appeal is equipment and an inviting cabin for the purchase price. The reviewers are less united about ride, refinement and efficiency, which is why a test drive remains a worthwhile next step. Read their verdicts below, then follow the links for the full assessments.
Three independent UK perspectives
Auto Express
SHS-H road test · 18 March 2026
Recognises the stronger appeal of hybrid power and generous specification, while finding the efficiency less convincing than key established rivals. Its measured test result is not the same as an official WLTP claim.
Autotrader
SHS-H review · 18 March 2026
Highlights cabin value, comfort and achievable fuel-efficiency claims. Its priorities and test experience differ from Auto Express, so the similar score should not be read as identical conclusions.
Carwow
Petrol/hybrid range · updated 10 July 2026
Praises the equipment and interior, and finds the hybrid smoother in town than the petrol version. It also flags driving and infotainment compromises for buyers to try for themselves.
What the reviews agree is worth seeing
The equipment list is one of the OMODA 5’s strongest attractions. A showroom visit lets you judge the displays, seating position and everyday controls rather than deciding solely from screen sizes.
Autotrader describes the SHS-H as having a “Great interior for the money”.
For current UK SHS-H cars, Knight starts at £25,755 OTR and Noble at £29,255 OTR before options. A reviewed Noble cabin should not be treated as the standard equipment of a Knight quotation.
What SHS-H changes in everyday use
The SHS-H is a full hybrid, so it does not need to be plugged in. Its system manages petrol and electric propulsion automatically, with a 1.8kWh traction battery. That gives an alternative for guests who want hybrid assistance without organising home charging.
Carwow particularly identifies the hybrid’s smooth electric response at low speed. The published verdict also makes clear that choosing a hybrid does not remove every criticism of the car’s driving behaviour.
Take a route that resembles your own use if a suitable test drive is available. Pay attention to low-speed response, road-surface comfort and the controls you use most often; those are more helpful checks than trying to reproduce a magazine’s score.
Use the review to make a better shortlist
Bring three questions to your visit: does the driving position work, does the rear seat suit your passengers, and can you operate the climate and phone functions comfortably? It is worth bringing your usual luggage too.
The older launch petrol reviews quote different power outputs, trim names and prices. Match any verdict to its review date and the vehicle being quoted. The current UK petrol listing is 147 PS; that is not the output of the original petrol launch car.
If the SHS-H’s price, equipment and no-plug routine suit you, the next step is a current quotation and an appointment—not accepting or rejecting the car from one review line.
