Captur or Toyota Yaris Cross?
With only £50 between these two manufacturer on-the-road prices, the decision comes down to how you use your small SUV: adjustable family space, cabin technology and your everyday driving.
At a glance
- Captur techno E-Tech full hybrid 160: £27,395 manufacturer OTR, with a sliding rear bench and Google built-in.
- New Yaris Cross Icon Hybrid 130: £27,445 manufacturer OTR, front-wheel drive and CVT automatic.
- Both are full hybrids: neither needs plugging in. These are current UK versions, not older engine or trim combinations.
Two full hybrids, two different priorities
Captur makes a particularly strong case if you want to adjust the balance between rear legroom and luggage space. The techno grade adds a connected cabin without asking you to move to the top of the range.
Yaris Cross suits buyers who want Toyota’s full-hybrid system in a compact SUV. The current Icon Hybrid 130 is the relevant starting point here; older Hybrid 116 road tests are not a specification for this car.

The Captur’s sliding bench changes the packing plan
Captur’s rear bench slides through 160mm. Move it back when rear passengers need the space, or forward when a larger load is the priority.
For the full hybrid, Renault’s UK brochure gives 326–440dm³ VDA of boot volume according to bench position. The larger petrol-Captur figures quoted elsewhere are not the full-hybrid boot measurement.
A forward bench setting is a trade-off with passenger room. Try your child seat or sit behind your own driving position before choosing the luggage arrangement you would use most often.
A useful boot test beats a headline litre figure
The current Toyota specification page uses several different luggage labels. A useful showroom comparison is therefore to put the same pushchair, cabin cases or weekly shop into each car, with the passenger seats set as you need them.
Captur’s adjustable bench is the key distinction; Yaris Cross uses a fixed rear seating position for this comparison. Look at the opening, load height and usable floor shape as well as the quoted capacity.
Give your rear passengers a say
If friends or family regularly travel in the back, check door access and knee room before the dashboard attracts all the attention. Set the front seat for your usual driver, then test the space behind it.
Toyota’s current UK Icon specification lists a 4,167mm body length. That compact footprint may appeal for everyday parking, while Captur’s seat adjustment lets you vary the interior priorities.
A connected cabin with familiar navigation
Captur techno includes Renault’s 10.4-inch openR link system with Google built-in, alongside a 10.25-inch driver display. If navigation and voice interaction are central to your journeys, ask for a demonstration with your own phone.
A short demonstration should cover entering a destination, switching audio and finding the controls you use while parked. Confirm any connected-service requirements for the exact vehicle and account.
Look beyond screen size
Yaris Cross Icon’s current equipment includes a 9-inch Toyota Touch 3 screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and a reversing camera. Those are useful essentials if you prefer to bring familiar phone apps into the car.
The image below shows the cabin in Toyota’s current manufacturer photography; a higher grade is pictured. Use the Icon equipment list, rather than the photographed upholstery or every visible feature, for your quote.
Parking equipment: check the grade, then try it
Captur techno’s equipment includes front, rear and side parking sensors. Renault also illustrates parking assistance within the wider Captur range, but the availability of additional assistance must be checked for the exact grade and options.
Yaris Cross Icon lists a reversing camera and adaptive cruise control. In both cars, assistance supports the driver: ask the retailer to explain how it is activated and where its operating limits apply.
Which full hybrid fits your routine?
Neither car requires a home charger. Both manage their petrol and electric power automatically, so they are straightforward options when plugging in is inconvenient.
Choose Captur if rear-seat flexibility and its techno cabin are high on your list. Put Yaris Cross alongside it if Toyota’s compact SUV package and Icon equipment match your priorities.
On a test drive, include the manoeuvres you repeat every week: a tight parking space, a hill start and the road where you normally join faster traffic. Judge refinement and response for yourself rather than treating a manufacturer efficiency figure as a personal guarantee.
Get comfortable before choosing
Try the Captur driving position and the reach to the central display. Then check the same tasks in the Toyota, including how easily another household driver can find their preferred position.
The best specification is the one that serves those repeated journeys. A modest price difference matters less if one cabin layout makes daily use noticeably easier for you.
