Solterra: which charging cable?

The right connection depends on where you charge. For the UK 71.4kWh Solterra, separate the cable you carry for AC charging from the connector supplied by a rapid charger.

Start with the car’s identity

This guide covers the 71.4kWh Solterra currently described on Invicta’s model page and Subaru UK’s existing-model page. Subaru also lists a forthcoming replacement separately; its equipment should not be assumed to match.

Before buying new or used, ask the team to identify the exact vehicle and show you its charging inlet and cable kit. A registration year alone is less useful than the car’s build specification and handbook.

Type 2: the cable to carry for AC charging

The charging inlet is on the front left wing. Subaru identifies Type 2 as the connection for AC charging, with a 7kW AC rating for this series.

At an untethered home wallbox or compatible public AC post, a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable connects the car to the socket. At a tethered wallbox, the charging lead is already attached to the unit.

Check whether the charger you plan to use is tethered and whether the cable comfortably reaches your parking position. A charger’s higher advertised power does not increase the car’s own AC charging limit.

CCS: the lead belongs to the rapid charger

For DC rapid charging, this Solterra uses CCS. The public rapid charger provides its own attached cable; your loose Type 2-to-Type 2 cable is for AC charging.

Subaru lists a maximum DC charging capability of 150kW for this series. That is a peak capability, rather than a constant speed throughout a session.

Check the connector shown by your chosen charge-point operator before travelling. Battery temperature, charge level and charger capability all affect the session, so do not plan a stop from the headline power alone.

Check the supplied kit before you leave

Subaru’s UK charging FAQ describes a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable and a Type 2-to-UK domestic-plug cable supplied with a Solterra. Ask for the exact included equipment to be confirmed on your car, especially when buying pre-owned.

Have the team show you the cable labels, condition and operating instructions. Missing accessories should be resolved in the quotation and handover, rather than discovered at your first charge.

For regular home charging, discuss a suitable dedicated wallbox and installation with a qualified installer. If using a domestic charging lead, follow the vehicle and lead instructions and have the socket’s suitability assessed; do not improvise adapters or extension leads.

Learn the charging controls at handover

Ask for a demonstration of the charging display, any charging schedule and the procedure for connecting and releasing the lead. Practise while the team is available to help.

Where the vehicle and account support Subaru Care, the app offers battery-management and remote-charging functions. Ask the team to explain activation and any applicable service terms for your exact car.

Keep a suitable public charging option in mind for journeys away from home. Cable compatibility, access hours and payment arrangements are separate checks.

Your questions answered

Do I need a separate CCS cable?

A compatible DC rapid charger has its own attached CCS lead. The loose Type 2-to-Type 2 cable is used with compatible untethered AC sockets.

Will an 11kW or 22kW AC post charge this car at that speed?

The 71.4kWh series described here is listed with 7kW AC charging. The car, supply and charge point together determine the rate; a more powerful post does not change the onboard limit.

Are both cables included with every used Solterra?

Do not assume so. Subaru’s new-car FAQ describes the cable kit, but a pre-owned car’s supplied accessories need individual confirmation.

Does this cover the forthcoming Solterra?

No. Subaru UK lists the replacement separately. Confirm that car’s own UK specification and handbook before applying these details.
