Crosstrek X-MODE: Limited or Touring?

Both UK Crosstrek trims have permanent all-wheel drive and X-MODE. Touring adds a second X-MODE setting—but that does not mean Limited misses out on Subaru’s core capability.

At a glance

  • Limited: one-mode X-MODE with Hill Descent Control.
  • Touring: two-mode X-MODE with Hill Descent Control.
  • Both: permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive; X-MODE and SI-Drive serve different purposes.

What does X-MODE actually do?

X-MODE helps the Subaru Crosstrek manage difficult, low-grip conditions by coordinating the engine, transmission, all-wheel-drive system and braking controls. It is an additional layer of control, not a switch that turns an ordinary two-wheel-drive car into a four-wheel-drive one.

Permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is already part of both current UK trims. X-MODE changes how the vehicle’s systems work together when the conditions call for it.

Think about the surfaces you regularly encounter: a steep loose track to a property, for example, rather than assuming an extra mode is something you need on every normal journey. Follow the handbook’s operating conditions and speed limits.

The UK trim difference

Crosstrek Limited

Subaru’s current UK equipment table lists X-MODE with one mode and Hill Descent Control. Limited already includes permanent all-wheel drive, so choosing it does not mean giving up the underlying Subaru drivetrain.

Crosstrek Touring

The UK table lists X-MODE with two modes and Hill Descent Control. The additional setting gives you more choice for challenging conditions. Ask for a demonstration of the settings and when each is appropriate.

Hill Descent Control is a separate help

Hill Descent Control moderates speed and braking on a suitable descent, helping the driver concentrate on steering. It is included with the X-MODE equipment listed for both Limited and Touring.

It does not remove the need to judge the route, surface or available grip. Nor does choosing Touring mean every steep or slippery route becomes suitable. Tyres, visibility and your decisions still matter.

At a viewing, ask where the X-MODE and Hill Descent information appears and what the indicators mean. Learning the controls while parked is more useful than discovering them for the first time on an unfamiliar track.

X-MODE is not SI-Drive

Crosstrek also has SI-Drive, Subaru’s selectable engine and transmission response system. Subaru describes its Intelligent and Sport settings as ways to change the character of power delivery.

That is a different job from X-MODE’s coordination for difficult surfaces. Touring’s “two modes” in the X-MODE specification are not simply the Intelligent and Sport settings renamed.

If you are comparing adverts, keep these features separate. A listing that says “SI-Drive” alone does not tell you whether that car has one-mode or two-mode X-MODE. Check its UK trim and equipment record.

Which version would suit you?

Start with Limited if you want the shared AWD and X-MODE capability, then decide whether Touring’s wider equipment package earns its place in your budget. You do not have to buy the higher trim simply to get X-MODE.

Look more closely at Touring if the extra setting is relevant to your regular routes. Ask the team to explain the difference using the current UK handbook, then weigh it alongside the other features you will actually use.

Invicta Subaru Crawley can help with a specification enquiry and discuss appointment availability. Take a description of your route and its surfaces—not just the phrase “country driving”—so the conversation relates to your needs. Compare current Subaru offers for the exact trim afterwards.

Your questions answered

Does every UK Crosstrek have X-MODE?

The current UK Subaru specification lists X-MODE with Hill Descent Control on both Limited and Touring. Limited has one mode; Touring has two.

Does Limited still have permanent all-wheel drive?

Yes. Permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is part of both current UK Crosstrek trims. Touring’s extra X-MODE setting is not what gives the car AWD.

Does Touring’s two-mode X-MODE mean Intelligent and Sport?

No. Intelligent and Sport belong to SI-Drive, which changes engine and transmission response. X-MODE serves a different purpose in difficult surface conditions.

Should X-MODE be used for every journey?

Use it according to the vehicle handbook, including its operating conditions and speed limits. It is not a requirement for ordinary driving simply because the car has it.

Where can I discuss the two trims?

Contact Invicta Subaru Crawley with your intended use. The team can explain the current UK specification and confirm viewing or test-drive availability.
