Forester: Limited, Field or Touring?

Every Forester has the same core all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain. The choice between Limited, Field and Touring is about comfort, finish and convenience.

Your quick guide

  • Current UK prices: Limited £39,995 OTR; Field £41,545; Touring £44,100.
  • Shared capability: Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, automatic transmission and up to 1,870kg braked towing.
  • Grade choice: Field adds practical cabin and convenience upgrades; Touring adds leather, a sunroof and heated rear seats.

The core Forester specification is shared

All three UK grades use the 2.0-litre e-BOXER petrol-electric hybrid system with Lineartronic automatic transmission and permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. There is no external charging connection to organise.

Two-mode X-MODE and Hill Descent Control are part of the shared specification, alongside 220mm ground clearance and a maximum 1,870kg braked towing figure. Choosing the entry grade does not mean choosing a different core drivetrain.

The entry grade

Limited: start with what you already get

Limited includes heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory, a large central touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 360-degree camera is another feature you can try without moving up a grade.

The EyeSight assistance package and Driver Monitoring System are also standard. Ask the team to explain the settings and alerts, then familiarise yourself with them during your drive. They are assistance systems, with the driver responsible for control and observation.

If the fabric interior suits you and the extra tailgate, heating or roof features are not priorities, Limited gives you the same core AWD and quoted towing capacity at the lowest starting price.

That makes it worth including in your comparison even if you originally had a higher grade in mind. Sit in the actual car and try the controls before deciding which equipment you will miss or use.

Everyday practicality

Field: practical details for an active week

Field’s £1,550 premium over Limited adds water-repellent synthetic-leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, navigation and a gesture-operated powered tailgate. Each is a specific feature to test rather than a general promise of a better car.

For regular dog walks, family outings or muddy sports kits, compare how you would use the seat finish and loading access. Water-repellent upholstery helps with care, but it does not replace suitable seat protection or the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

Both Limited and Field have a 508-litre boot with the rear seats up and a quoted 1,731 litres with them folded. Try your dog crate, pushchair or usual luggage in the car to check the shape as well as the volume.

Official UK information: Subaru Forester grade and luggage specifications.

Touring: more comfort for rear passengers

Touring’s main additions include heated rear seats, a sliding glass sunroof and genuine leather upholstery with suede inserts. Its 19-inch wheels and exterior finish also distinguish it from Field.

The boot remains 508 litres with the rear seats up. Subaru’s detailed UK table lists 1,679 litres with seats folded for Touring, compared with 1,731 litres for Limited and Field, so the maximum luggage figure is not identical across the range.

If the rear seats are regularly occupied, ask your passengers to try Touring’s seating and roof before choosing. If you mainly carry bulky loads with seats folded, compare the available space of the exact grades.

The extra equipment does not change the published 1,870kg maximum braked towing limit. Any towing decision still needs the particular car’s permitted masses and your trailer’s laden weight to be checked.

Warranty and your showroom visit

Subaru’s UK new-car warranty is three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The hybrid battery has eight-year or 100,000-mile cover, and the manufacturer lists three years of UK and European recovery assistance. Maintenance requirements, exclusions and individual component terms apply. Read Subaru’s warranty information.

  • Bring your usual load. Check bags, child seats and any dog crate in the exact grade.
  • Try the tailgate. Compare Limited with Field’s powered operation.
  • Include your passengers. Try Touring’s rear seating and sunroof together.
  • Explain your towing needs. Bring the trailer or caravan’s weight details for the team to discuss.
