Is the Mazda2 Hybrid right for your week?
If you want a compact car for the commute, shopping and trips into town, the Mazda2 Hybrid is an appealing place to start. It gives you an automatic gearbox and a full-hybrid powertrain without needing a home charger.
The electric motor can move the car on its own when conditions allow. At other times, the petrol engine and motor work together. The system manages that change for you, while recovering energy as you slow down.
You still fill up with petrol. “Self-charging” describes how the car manages its battery; it does not mean the car makes energy without using fuel or recovering it from movement.

What does the mpg figure mean for you?
Mazda quotes 67.3–74.3 mpg WLTP combined across the range. That is a standardised comparison figure, rather than a promise for every journey. Weather, traffic, speed and short cold starts all affect the fuel you use.
The useful point is that every trim uses the same 116 PS hybrid system and CVT automatic. You can choose the equipment you prefer without changing to a different engine.
On a test drive, include roads you use regularly. Try pulling away in traffic, joining a faster road and parking in a typical space. Those moments will tell you more about the fit for your routine than a single number.
Which Mazda2 Hybrid trim should you choose?
Start with the features you use most. The current UK range includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for compatible phones; the higher grades add parking, display and cabin upgrades.

Small car, everyday practicality
The Mazda2 Hybrid has a quoted 286-litre boot. The most useful check is how that space handles what you normally carry: a pushchair, the weekly shop or your weekend bags.
Bring a couple of those items when you visit. Check the boot opening, rear-seat access and how easily you can reach the controls with your normal driving position set.
