MG HS PHEV: charging made simple
Home, work or a public charging bay: here is how to make the most of your plug-in hybrid.
Your quick guide
- Home charging: around four hours on a suitable 7 kW AC wallbox.
- Electric range: up to 75 miles WLTP combined for the current model.
- Getting started: check your parking, tariff and Type 2 cable before choosing a charger.
Plug into your routine
Make electric miles part of your day
The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid can cover up to 75 miles on electric power under combined WLTP test conditions. For a driver who can charge regularly, that makes the journey to work, shopping and local visits a useful place to start.
The practical question is where the car will be parked long enough to charge. A driveway wallbox, a workplace bay or a public AC point near somewhere you already visit can each fit a different routine. The petrol engine remains available for longer journeys.
This guide covers the current-generation HS PHEV. If you are looking at a used example, check its model year: earlier HS Plug-in Hybrids have different batteries and charging figures.

Choose a point near work, shops or a regular stop so the charging session fits your plans.
The approximate four-hour wallbox figure is listed on Invicta’s current HS PHEV page. Charging time depends on the starting charge, equipment and conditions. MG lists compatible cables on its UK accessories page.
Home charging
A simple evening habit
A suitable wallbox makes charging straightforward: park, connect and check that the session has started. If you have a lower overnight electricity rate, check whether your charger can schedule the session for that period.
For an untethered unit, you bring the cable; a tethered unit has its own. MG lists a 32-amp Type 2 cable for the HS Plug-in Hybrid. Ask the team to confirm the cable supplied with your particular car and whether any additional cable is needed for your chosen setup.
Arrange a site assessment before choosing an installation. The installer can check the electrical supply, cable route and where the car will normally sit. Follow the charging instructions for your vehicle and equipment.
Understand the cost
Use your tariff, not a headline saving
The easiest starting point is the energy shown by the charger multiplied by your electricity unit rate. For example, a 20 kWh charging session at 25p per kWh costs £5. This is an illustration, not a quoted tariff or the cost of a full HS battery charge.
At public points, also check session fees, parking charges and overstay rules. Your charger’s energy reading includes what it supplied, which is more useful for costing than assuming every unit reaches the battery.
Regenerative braking recovers some energy as you slow down. Plugging in regularly is how you replenish the larger amount of energy available for electric driving. Actual range varies with temperature, speed, load and how you use the car.
Your questions answered
How long does the MG HS PHEV take to charge?
Invicta lists around four hours for a full charge using a suitable 7 kW AC wallbox. A partial top-up can take less time; starting charge, equipment and conditions affect the session.
Which charging cable does it use?
The current HS Plug-in Hybrid uses a Type 2 AC connection. MG lists a 32-amp Type 2 cable as an accessory. Confirm the cables included with your car before buying another.
Can I charge without a home wallbox?
Compatible workplace or public AC points are options. Check access, connector, tariff and parking rules. For any domestic charging arrangement, follow the vehicle instructions and have the installation assessed for suitability.
Do I have to charge it every night?
There is no single routine for everyone. Regular charging gives you more opportunities to use electric power. Plan around your daily mileage and where the car is parked.
Can it still drive when the electric range is used?
Yes. With fuel available, the petrol engine and hybrid system allow the HS PHEV to continue driving when the usable electric-driving charge is low.
How far can it travel on electric power?
MG quotes up to 75 miles WLTP combined for the current-generation model. This is a comparison figure, not a guaranteed result for every journey.
