Renault 4 or Renault 5?
Two award-winning electric Renaults with different priorities. Renault 5 keeps things compact; Renault 4 adds space and easier luggage access.
Your quick guide
- Entry prices after the stated grant: Renault 5 Evolution £21,495; Renault 4 Evolution+ £23,445.
- Longer-range comparison: Renault 5 Techno+ up to 259 miles WLTP; Renault 4 Evolution+ up to 249 miles.
- Space: Renault 4 is 222mm longer. Evolution+/Techno+ have 420-litre boots, against 326 litres in Renault 5 Evolution/Techno+.
Start with the battery and the space you need
Renault 5 is the shorter hatchback, with a choice of 40kWh or 52kWh battery. Renault 4 uses the 52kWh battery across the current UK range and gives you a higher body, more luggage space and a lower boot loading sill.
For price, compare the current versions carefully. The entry Renault 5 is a 40kWh Evolution; Renault 4 starts with the 52kWh Evolution+. A longer-range Renault 5 Techno+ has more equipment than the entry Renault 4, so their prices are not a like-for-like trim comparison.

Prices and current version names from Renault’s UK guide dated 1 October 2026. The quoted prices include the stated Electric Car Grant deduction where shown; they do not include optional extras. Eligibility, availability and offers should be confirmed when ordering. WLTP range is a comparison figure, not a guaranteed result.
Smaller electric hatchback
Renault 5: compact size with a longer-range option
At 3,922mm long, Renault 5 is 222mm shorter than Renault 4. That makes its footprint a useful point to compare if your driveway, garage or local parking space is tight. Both are five-door cars, so the hatchback format does not mean giving up rear-door access.
Evolution’s 40kWh battery offers up to 197 miles WLTP. For a larger battery, Techno+ pairs 52kWh with 150hp and up to 259 miles WLTP. Its £27,695 OTR price becomes £23,945 after the stated £3,750 grant saving in the October guide.
Techno+ also brings Google built-in and further equipment. Bring your phone and explore the display while parked; check the exact connected-service terms, as well as the screen itself.
Renault 5 Evolution and Techno+ have a quoted 326-litre boot. Iconic Five+ and Roland Garros+ are listed at 285 litres, so compare the actual grade when luggage capacity matters.

More room for family luggage
Renault 4: the extra space is the main attraction
Renault 4 measures 4,144mm long and has a boot loading sill quoted at 60.7cm from the ground. The wider opening and lower sill are features to try with your own luggage, especially if you regularly load a pushchair or heavier bags.
Evolution+ and Techno+ have 420 litres of luggage volume, increasing to 1,405 litres with the rear seats folded. Iconic+ is listed at 365 litres with its rear seats up. These are version-specific figures, so avoid applying the largest boot number to every grade.
Its 52kWh battery provides a WLTP range of 241–249 miles across the current range. The 249-mile figure applies to Evolution+; the equipment and wheel choices of other grades affect the official result.
Renault quotes up to 750kg braked towing for Renault 4, against 500kg for Renault 5. If you plan to tow, confirm the actual vehicle and trailer’s loading limits with the team before deciding.

Similar home charging, different rapid-charge limits
Both cars support up to 11kW AC charging on a suitable supply. A typical single-phase home installation may deliver less than that, so the car’s maximum AC rating does not describe every home charging speed.
Renault 5, 40kWh
- DC rapid-charge maximum
- 80kW
- Quoted DC charging window
- 15–80% in around 31 minutes
- 7.4kW AC charging window
- 15–80% in around 3 hours 55 minutes
A smaller battery can suit shorter regular journeys; compare the range with your actual week.
Renault 5 and Renault 4, 52kWh
- DC rapid-charge maximum
- 100kW
- Quoted DC charging window
- 15–80% in around 30 minutes
- Renault 5: 7.4kW AC charging window
- 15–80% in around 5 hours 11 minutes
The larger battery adds range. Charger output, battery temperature and charge level affect time.

Independent recognition
Two Renaults with awards behind them
Renault 4 was named Car of the Year and Best Small Family Car in the 2026 Parkers New Car Awards. Renault 5 took Best First Car in the same awards. The 2026 awards were announced in October 2025.
Those awards recognise different strengths. Use them alongside the details that matter for your household: boot access, seat comfort, range, equipment and the current offer. They support your shortlist without replacing a test drive.
